rumbling sound when downshifting
hey all,
I have 03 s2000 and bought it used from a toyota dealer a couple months ago.
When I first drove it, it was making a weird rear noise when I let off the gas at a cruising speed (also when downshifting).
I took it back to the dealer since I had a warranty and they said it was something complicated, so they sent me to a honda dealer with a same owner.
Honda figured out that one of my gear was broken. I left my car for a couple of days and when I called Honda, they told me Toyota has taken the car back to fix the problem.
Toyota told me that they replaced the whole gear box and fixed the problem.
So I picked up the car and while driving home the sound was still there.
I can't really expain how it sounds... but its something like a rumbling sound..its louder than the engine noise..
Today, I took the car back to Toyota and told them it still has the rear noise , and one of the tech guys told me that theses s2000 are supposed to make this sound. He told me even Honda guys told the same thing.. one of the Honda techs has a s2000 and his car makes an even worse noise than mine..
So I came home..
If this is a usual thing for our cars.. I am fine.. but this kinda irritates me.
Can anyone give me an opinion on this?
Next wednesday I am taking this car to another Honda dealership (unfortunately same ownership with other dealers I have been to) and get a second opinion on the rear noise.. but I just want to post this issue on this forum first so when I speak to them, I know what to tell them...
Sorry for being so long.. thanks for being patient, and any help of opinion is appreciated!

Sounds to me like you are describing "clutch buzz". Which is a very annoying yet harmless trait of the S2000. Search this site for "clutch buzz" to learn more and to verify if this is your problem. Good luck!

Your info doesn't say where you are located, but you might be able to find another owner who is willing to meet up with you and go for a ride with you to hear the noise if you post in your regional forum. That way you could get an idea if it is a problem or not.

And clutch buzz would be unlikely on an 03. Clutch buzz was supposed to be fixed with the 02 clutch redesign.
