Default Engine break-in

I have seen many topics saying that honda uses a special oil in new engines to properly break in their frm sleeved engines. I am installing a new shortblock and would like to know what would be the best oil to use to break it in properly. I appreciate the help.

Road Rage addressed this in the Oil Journals a few years back.
He mentioned Valvoline High Mileage had a formulation chemically very similar to Honda's OEM factory fill (used for break-in). Both oils have a higher moly content than other off the shelf conventional oils.
I think this oil will work just as well as the factory break-in fill, and achieve the intent of the factory break-in oil. Just ensure you use the OEM PCX filter and follow the initial factory break-in guidance.

When you say Valvoline high mileage do you mean Valvoline Max life??? They do not have an oil called just high mileage. Just want to make sure before I fill her up.

If you go to the redline oil website they sell an additive designed to help break in fresh engines.

How about first start-up is there anything I should do differently such as disconnect the coils and let it crank to build up oil pressure without firing? And would still like to confirm that Valvoline Max Life is the oil that slipstream444 was recommending.

That's what I used to do with my Integra. I disconnected the distributor harness and cranked until the oil light went away or I saw oil pressure on my oil pressure gauge. You definitely dont want to fire up right away since the stock idle goes to about 2500 rpm when cold.

There is no special break in oil used by Honda.

Use a good, non systhetic, motor oil. Use no synthetic oil for the first 7500 miles. Follow break in prodecure outlined in the manual.

Honda uses a moly based assembly lube when putting motors togeather. This is what you see in an oil anaylsis, not some mystery addtive or oil.

I understand there is no special break in oil per say but the valvoline was suggested due to its high moly content which makes sense. The max life is a syn blend just wanted to make sure it was a good idea before I put it in my new engine.
