Engine Damage from rev-limiter bouncing
Here's a link to the case at hand....
Over-rev
Went to the guys house and did a compression check, he's got 0 in cyl 1 and 170-176 in the rest. After speaking with him, he's quite knowledgeable on how the whole over-rev thing can happen, and understands what a mecahnical over-rev is due to wrong gear selection. He has nothing to hide, as he is not looking for warranty service. So if you guys can keep an open mind, we can discuss this possibility. I honestly believe this guy has a genuine case. Is it possible for the engine, when free revving in neutral, to over-rev? We all want to say no, because the ECU cuts spark, fuel. On acceleration, the the rpm's are bought up at much slower speed than when free revving. Please read his original post first, then come back here to post what you think....

I've certainly hit the hard limiter in 1st which is acceleration about as fast as you can get it with the clutch/transmission engaged. No problem (I think - haven't looked at retainers). However, a clutchless overrev may be as bad as a downshift into too low a gear since there's nothing other than rotational mass to prevent rapid spinup where the spark/fuel coutouts simply can't happen fast enough, especially with the inertia to be overcome to stop the engine from gaining revs. Basically, a mechanical overrev could be achieved by simply sitting still with the clutch in and flooring the gas.
If the electronics had some sort of predictor as to the rate of change of engine speed so that it would kick in earlier to prevent the overrev it could be possible to prevent this. However, I doubt seriously that such a beast is incorporated into firmware...
It's all a SWAG on my part, however.

I know that it's not a mechanical over-rev, but I think if you bounce off the rev limiter enough you can do some damage. I think it has to do with piston deceleration??

could take some pic? I'm guessing that it has bent or broken valve. if it's broken, cylinder wall must be scorched... right? I'm still wondering on retainer if it's broken or not.. keep us posted, bill. very good information.

I'll have the car in about 2 weeks, I'll take pics....The od thing is, he was able to drive it normally. The condition then worsened to what it is now.

All I have to go on now, is the guy said when he changed his plugs, they were not tight enough possibly. He said with one hand they just came right out. Maybe the car missed the plug TSB?

True, last 4 digits I believe are 1226 off the top of my head. Stock NGK's came out of it yesterday afternoon when I put new ones in, and they were fairly loose. Like Bill said, I was able to get them out using a fairly short wrench and 1 hand. I didn't take the car in for the TSB and I'm pretty sure it didn't go in before I owned it as it only had 2500 miles on the clock when I purchased it.
You guys with low number VIN 02's may want to check those loose plugs, Bill mentioned it may have played a role in what happened in my case...
Stay tuned
