Default engine detonation

my jdm spec s2k has a knocking problem between 3000rpm - 5500rpm. the fuel here in indonesia is pretty bad. although they are specified at 98octane, in reality they are a lot worst than other countries with lower octane ratings. my friends suggested the use of av gas, about 20% at every fill up. it is a common practice here to mix avgas with pump gas 50:50. i was wondering if anybody has tried using avgas on their s2k with any favourable results.

Try to get some octane booster and add to each tankful. I'm not sure that AV gas is a good idea...

If you have detonation, drive it real easy or kiss it good bye. The AV gas will work but make sure there is no lead in it to mess up the catalytic converter (you do have one of these don't you?)

Just a point of clarification, your 98 Octane is not adequate even if the gasoline was measured correctly. The 98 Octange you have is determine using the RON method which is equivalent to the US 91-92 Octane (determined using the (R+M)/2 method). I think the JDM engine needs a 103 Octane (RON).

THe other thing you could do is to use the USDM engine's head gasket and get the compression ratio closer to US spec).

If you have JDM spec S2000 in Jakarta, all I can say is good luck with the Fuel.
You might try a PM with Takashi Kazumori. He might have some suggestions on what to do as he has a JDM spec car in Australia.

RHH, I don't know what sorta fuel is available in Indonesia but because of the high humidity and weather temperatures, not getting the right fuel mixture means engine detonation. I don't know if you can source this in your country but look for "NOS Branded Octane Booster - Off Road Use Only". It comes in a blue bottle much like a typical NOS cylinder but this is not NOS, only made by NOS.

There are 3 versions available and you should be looking for this specific one. It costs approximately AUD$15 a bottle for me and I buy them in bulk. If you cannot source this, I don't really believe in AVGas ... You might as well mix 30% leaded fuel and 70% premium unleaded fuel, you'll have a better chance not screwin up the car. If not the last option, buy a local spec ECU which should be the worse option possible. Good luck anyway, bad weather there for the car nevertheless.

tried mixing 2 bottles of 104 octane boosters to 3/4 tank of gas but it still knocks.
i have apexi v-afc in my car. it helps if i increase the fuel by +8 at 4000rpm under narrow throtle but the car feels heavy as its running too rich. there is no catalytic converter in my car so i guess it is safer and better to mix avgas? how does the knock sensor work? i thought it will automatically retard the timing and stop the knocking?
