Flywheel: resurface or change ? (Photo)
Hi,
Actually doing my clutch : act pp, oem disk, oem bearing. And here is how looks my flywheel: https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...194cdec458.jpg I honestly think it needs to be resurfaced or changed, but I am not familiar with flywheel inspection... What do you think? I am also supercharging my car (rotrex c30-94) and I am not very interested in installing a lighter flywheel (my car is ap1). Is there really a big interest to do it? Thanks for your advices. |
Yeah that looks like it would need to be resurfaced.
I've upgraded to a ACT prolite flywheel in my AP1 and it was very nice improvement, no drawbacks except the added cost :) |
Now the answer is:
- resurface my oem ap1 flywheel (cost ~50€ ?) OR - go for the competition clutch ultra lightweight flywheel 4.42KG (9LB 12OZ) (cost ~265€) I don't know if the benefit will be that noticeable. On the other way, I wonder if adding the supercharger isn't adding also some "inertia" to the engine. So the light flywheel would help to minimize that :D |

i got the lighter flywheel from CC due to mine was heat damaged. Not too much difference, helps with blipping the throttle on downshifts

I am going to buy the CC Ultralight one: 8.5 lbs.

From the guys with experience. Get the act promote flywheel. Will make a huge driving difference and allow quicker shifts. Any fool recommending otherwise simply doesn't know what they are talking about. No point in checking straightness, analyzing color, checking balance, taking it to machine shop, relying on them to do the job right..... Just get a new one. And get the lightest one you can find it will make take your driving experience to another level.

FYI, its a two year old thread. He already bought the lighter flywheel.
But to those finding this thread, several good points were made here. Yes, a sc does add more mass, more inertia, so lighter flywheel can offset that. Crank pulley, all the idler pulleys, and of course the rotating mass of sc itself. A lighter flywheel makes engine more responsive. So as mentioned blipping like for rev match downshift is more responsive. But responsive is also more demanding. Flywheel mass helps damp things, so takeoff from dead stop is easier, less rpm lost during shifting, etc. If you are smooth and precise, or want to learn to be more smooth and precise, a lighter flywheel will be a benefit. Its a not a fast car, its a responsive car. Things that augment that augment the cars personality. |
