First thing that came to mind when i heard the the vids is thats not the valvetrain, its in the bottom end/rod knock on either the crankshaft end but probably the wrist pin/piston slap end. I wonder if its one of the early series 02 with the old 2 hole banjo bolt squirters before they updated to 4 hole for better piston cooling.

I hope the purchase price reflected the motor issue.
Keep us posted.

Save yourself some time and cursing by dropping the trans, it is extremely difficult to pull them out together. Check out the Speed Academy video if you want to see them struggle to remove both at once. Good luck.

Dropped oil pan, pulled caps, bearings are pristine, I'm confused.

You check the wrist pins(top of rods?) As mentioned it sounded like piston slap to me.

been a while, and haven't had mush time, but rotated it buy hand and on the down stroke there is no play on any of the pistons. used a 6 inch extension to press down. friend came over while i was at work and pulled the tct, he said he exploded everywhere when he pulled it and he found all the pieces except the rod that actually applies tension.....fun....but i'm wondering if a shady mech removed it to bilk them for repairs....they were the type that did any suggested repairs, they gave me the receipts to prove it...cars had more coolant, brake and power steering flushes than any car i've ever seen.....yes ps flush

going to put pan back on soon and if noise there with new tct i'm going to pull the head
