Default Gas guage trauma

All of a sudden, I turn car on, after driving for 1/2 hour, and as i drive away the guage just increases to full bars...I have a half tank, it just increased to full by itself! And after turning it off it still reads full!! anyone know of this? thanks.

drive around some more the gauge will likely fix itself. Had this happen once after taking a very sharp turn and near the limit of grip.

Thanks I figure time will sort this out, if not then someone will have to fix it $$$ for me, I have no clue.
I did a search and found that this happened to someone else recently,no fix. I know the guage is vague at best, but this is new behavior.

Anyone Else??

Could be the sending unit for the fuel gauge. If it is unplugged, it will read full all of the time. More likely the ground is loose, or the wire is open.

this happens to me occasionally. i'm not sure what the problem is or how to fix it except to wait it out and remember how much gas you had before. For me, owned the car for 5 years and happened probably 3-4 times. Usually fixes itself anywhere from 10 minutes to a couple hours.

Interesting, this has not happened in the 8 years of ownership....and...on the way back home, driven say 15 miles it sloooooowwwwwllllyyyy reduced bars...it appears to be correct now!!! my son says it must be the sensor going bad....and it sounds like it is common in some cars intermitantly. Thankfully I use the trip set for figureing when to fill, about 260 miles per tank and i can put in 10-11 gallons.

Thanks to all of you for your replies, misery loves company!
