Default Gearing gurus. Plz chime in

I have a ap1 with a ap2 trans. The gearing is still too long for my liking, especially 4th. Was interesting in doing the 4.3 fd.

My question is the 4.3 fd in a ap2 trans would be equivalent to 4.56 in ap1 trans?

Also aside from ms racing, where can I find the 4.3 final drive

according to the rates published in hyperrev vol 112, which is #4 for s2000....

Stock AP1 @ Redline
43/66/91/116/139/166MPH

Stock AP2 @ Redline
37/56/77/99/122/150MPH

AP1 Motor w/ AP2 Tranny @ Redline...
41/63/87/111/137/169MPH

Stock AP1 @ Redline w/ 4.56FD
39/60/82/105/125/150MPH

AP1 Motor w/ AP2 Tranny @ Redline w/ 4.3FD
39/60/83/106/130/161MPH

so in short, yes, besides 4th and 5th, it's similar.
you could download the excel spreadsheet i used for the calculation here:

Have you already ditched the cat and lowered vtec to 3500-4000rpms? You will find this bump in mid range power more beneficial and you may choose to leave the gearing alone. I found your current config to be the sweet spot N/A. Unless your pulling a boat lol, increasing your gear multiplication starts to hinder you in acceleration performance in some situations, particularly the faster mph range.

very informative. thanks for this info!

i guess when you say "ap2" you mean the ap2's that came with the f22 in us?
or are the f20's ap2 transmissions in europe the same as the f22 ap2 in the us?

I have removed the cat but have not lowered the vtec. I'm still stock exhaust though minus the cat delete. So up next will probably be a cai and 3" single exhaust.

OEM Mazda 4.3 FD is awesome on the AP2's. It's subtle, and won't make cruising on the highway annoying. The Mazda gear in particular is extremely quiet. It's OEM, so the quality is great. And, it's relatively cheap. I've been running one in my track car for a few seasons. It's been solid.

Do you have part number for it? And is that all I would need?

As far as I know they updated the synchro's but not the ratio's (as the engine did not change).
So on S2ki, an AP2 gearbox is one from a F22/AP2 car.
