GUTTED S2KI STEERING RACK IS AS EASY AS AN RX7 RACK!
I finaly gutted / depowered my AP1 rack for my AP2!
After the precious advices and lots of patience from s2000sccaracer (many questions before do the conversion because it was the only one that i find that have this set-up, nothing on the internet, no picture on the internal, no instructions and no internals part view from HONDA since the rack his only sold as a complete part, no internals parts are sold separately), we finaly depowered my AP1 steering rack and it was as easy to do as it was for an RX7 steering rack!
The only pictures i find was on NSX PRIME site and the S2KI rack was very similar in the internal:
http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Technical/eps.htm, http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showth...ld-Part-1-of-3, http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showth...ld-Part-2-of-3, http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showth...ld-Part-3-of-3,
http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showth...g-rack-problem.
Thank you to my top tech Gabriel Dubé, a specialist on MAZDA RX7 that do it.
It take approximately 5 hours to do it on first try (remove and reinstall time on the car and alignement not included).
We will post instructions with pictures later but what a difference it was vs stock!
We will install it later this week on my car when we will receive the bushing that is needed when remove the brush of the motor and all the stuff in the rack to support the shaft on the left side but i was surprised how it is simple.
We remove the ball bearings that route on the shaft and the internal case with the 6 magnets under the black case that whas so heavy.
We also remove the damper on the torque sensor, we welded it for a more direct feel.
We reassemble all the internals parts with PROLAB GS-1000 full syntec grease.
We will put a sticker inside the cluster to avoid EPS light on or remove the LED and remove the ESP fuse to avoid electric problems but all the wires will stay connected for an OEM look and try to adjust caster to reduce steering effort.
Remember that is possible on all PRE-VSA (00 to 05) steering rack since there are no anti-slip/electronic throttle (i think that on 06-09 VSA, it will be more complicate but maybe its possible, i dont search for this).
The best rack to do it is the AP1 rack, since is more direct and precise and it was a direct fit on AP2 04 & 05.
We remove the pressed OEM rack bushings and install SPOON rigids bushings and C/R braces. With the welded damper of the torque sensor and the 13.8 ratio & 2.4 turns lock to lock, it will be so precise and direct!
Special thank to s2000sccaracer for your advices since you are the only one i know to have do this before!

Its not installed since we wait for the bushing but if i refered to the RX7 , it will be the same experience, lots more feedback form the road with just a little more effort if the car move on. The difference before and after gutted it is very impressive!

Awesome! I have been planning on doing that...had the rack taken apart for a few months. Need to buy a lathe if yours works out I would pay for that bushing.

My tech have the same set-up on his 1993 RX7 since 2 years without any problems and he ride long since the conversion, he will post pictures of the modifications but if you are interessed to the required bushing, its was from his own design but im sure if somewone was interessed, i think its possible he will sold it as a kit, i will see with Gabriel. PM if interessed.

Thats is the reason we made bushing to support this!

I've done this, however when removing the motor, you loose the support to the shaft on the passenger side. Not a big fan of this....
