Help! I think I got duped in an auction
Hi all,
Here is the story so far. I have a '06 that I built for the track, unfortunately, the engine blew up last year. So I hunted for a low mileage 04-05 motor because I found those were the best. The conversion from an 04-05 to an '06+ isn't hard. So I bought a '05 salvaged from an accident that supposedly had 22k miles on it. After $6500 in auction and a $850 shipping fee, I finally got it. It was a run and drive vehicle and everything works on it. I am unfamiliar with anything less than an '06 so I didn't notice anything wrong.
Flash forward a few weeks I start to dismantle the car and get ready to swamp the motor and convert it to an 06. I just discovered randomly that the block is stamped F20c1 and my heart sank. I got duped some how. So, I did some investigating and this is what I found.
Windshield vin: JHMAP21475S001671
Engine head vin: JHMAP11482T008936
Bonnet vin: JHMAP11482T008936
ECU: Someone wrote "05 s2000 on it" but the serial is 37820-pzx-ao3 / 1548-301251
So I can track down the title and figure out who the owner was and ask what happened to the motor, but at the end of the day, I am the one that is F'ed.
The question I want to ask the community is what are my options? The Ap1 engine is a sunk cost at this point and I might as well use it. It is unknown mileage and condition. It doesn't make sense to buy another AP2 engine, and I am already doing an engine swap so I wonder how hard would it be to swap the Ap1 into an Ap2? I assume swap the entire wire harness, cluster, ABS unit, and ABS pump?
Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point.

Billman mentioned the 04/05 is best. Probably because it's an ap2 that wasn't susceptible to the lean issues with dbw and the valve lashes we're set better from factory.
All that aside, I now have an ap1. I can easily swap the motor, ecu, and harness. But unsure about my 06 vsa and abs being compatible.

Not the best, but stand up to negligence the best
Yes AP1 needs thorough initial retainer inspection, and DBW cars need more frequent VA and modified exhaust valve clearance (.012)
The 2.0L will move less air, you may get RICH codes recurring. Perhaps flashpro with compatible tune.

Well said Billman! I feel you have a notification system each time your name is mentioned. If I can swap the ap1 in my app, I'll definitely upgrade the retainers.

My own preference would have been a DBW engine.
Are you going to use this engine as a "long block" and fit all the DBW-unique manifolds, valve cover, sensors, etc? Intuitively that's the way to preserve all the DBW features and tuning ability. The ECU can only read the data sent to it, it can't peek under the hood. No air pump needed with this setup. The shorter stroke will allow a higher rpm mechanically and all this is addressable via FlashPro.

i'm curious why the '06 DBW ECU will not work with the '02 AP1 engine provided all the DBW sensors and wiring are in place. Will have to be tuned for sure but I can't figure out how the ECU would know you're lying to it and refuse to work.
No experience in this swap (obviously! ) but curious.

According to this https://www.s2ki.com/forums/s2000-naturally-aspirated-forum-213/f20c-into-07-ap2-w-dbw-1096385/, it seems it can be done. All I gotta do is swap sensors, and trigger wheels, and position sensor, just as I already did. So, all is good? Only thing is my 06 ecu will redline at 8400 but the 02 can rev to 9000, so I can use flashpro to do it.
