Help! Not another engine ticking post.
 

Hi All,

I know I know and yes I have searched high and low for answers in different forums and watched countless youtube videos,

My 2001 AP1 is ticking. It's done 177k kms and normally I use 5w30 or 10w40 engine oil. I check my oil level every 2 weeks and serviced every 5,000 kms.

I have the following mods:
1) 1320 Headers
2) Berk HFC
3) Invidia Q300
4) OMNI Power CMC
5) K&N FIPK

And these are the things I have done/replaced etc:
1) TCT (new TCT modified with stronger springs)
2) Injectors have been professionally cleaned and inspected
3) AP2 Valve retainer and keepers
4) Valve clearance checked
5) New tensioner assembly
6) New belt
7) New water pump
8) New idle pulley
9) New coil packs
10) New fuel filter and pump
11) Replaced both primary and secondary oxygen sensor
12) Compression test 240 in all 4 cylinders

The ticking is quite prominent and you don't need to drive next to cars or walls to hear it but it doesn't sound like those videos where they've spun a bearing etc. I`ll try and get a video of the sound. Pretty sure it comes from the exhaust side of the engine (driver side/right side). The ticking comes on the moment the car is on but sometimes the ticking isn't there. I`m out of ideas. Help!

The next thing on the list I might look at is the LMA.

In for an answer. mine hasn't done it recently but does do it..

What is yours like at the moment? Mine started mild then you occasionally hear it when you drive between barriers or cars. Now it's pretty much the moment you start the car.

Only things I see on your list with any influence are the new TCT modified with stronger springs and the related valve clearances. Not sure the purpose or ramifications of the stronger springs. Mechanical valve train is clicky.

You can swap the OE TCT in 15 minutes and eliminate it as a factor.

@aus2000wa check your AC compressor bolts, I've seen them come loose, and the belt tension causes a ticking, which eventually turns to a knocking, as the compressor taps the block/oil pan.

One of the only things I can think of with the ticking coming from the driver side

Its an OEM one that's modified like how Billman modifies the TCT to last much longer.

Thanks. I'll check the bolts again just to be sure.

Unless your TCT is an actual Billman unit it's still on my suspect list for over tensioning the chain or bad parts or ... . ;)
