I have a pair of oil filter channel lock pliers. Like regular channel locks, but rounded shape to grab filters. Works very well.

I haven't had good luck with those ones that use a socket wrench and progressively grab filter tighter with torque. You can't generate the torque needed to bite harder until there is resistance, and no resistance until it begins to bite. Its a catch 22. You have to try to get them to bite before you apply any torque, so one hand is holding the contraption in place while the other is holding the wrench.

I've lost track of how many screwdrivers I've used on oil filters... The metal-kind, not the vodka-kind, although that might help!
