Default i can wiggle my gear shifter several inches while in gear, is this normal?

as the topic says, no matter what gear I am in, I can wiggle the gear shifter a couple of inches in any direction. also when I put it into gear such as 6 and push it all the way over and down, and then take my hand off of the shifter, it goes up and over a couple inches nearer the center, but stays in 6th (so it moves closer to neutral position but its still down and over and 6th, its just that I can push it down and over even further (and no i'm not pushing it down and then over into reverse) is this normal?

are you sure it's "inches"??

and not MM's????

all cars have some play in their respective shifters, but i've never heard of "inches"........

A friends Mazda MX6 her mechanic said it was some sort of tensioner coming lose but it wasn't a big deal. She never had it but I never had a problem driving it and her's was really lose you could move the whole lever all the way left and right in any gear. It was fine for the 5years she had it.

your problem is the plastic bushing at the bottom of the shifter.....all the way at the bottom. The part is about 2 dollars but is kinda messy to change.

the same part split in 2 pieces when my car had about 5000 miles and I changed it myself without dealing with the monkeys at the dealership.

cool, i took out my shifter a while ago when i was changing my interior carpet, and I don't have that plastic thing on the bottom on my shifter, and it wasn't in the cup thing the shifter goes into on the tranny, I guess mine fell off when i took it out or something, I'll go get one ordered. thanks a bunch!

My friend had an `87 RX-7 that did the same thing. He showed me one day and I totally flipped out. In any gear he could stand the stick straight up as if it was in neutral.
