Anyone else had problems with K&N oil filters? Recommended filters?
------------------------------------------
Letter to K&N tech support:
I was leaving home this morning when I noticed an oil stop under my 2000 S2000. I checked the oil to discover I had lost about 3 quarts of oil. I tracked the leak down to a small crack in the weld on outer casing of a K&N oil filter. Under normal driving conditions the oil drips. Under high loads the oil squirts (coating the entire underside and back of my car). This oil filter (HP-1004) was just installed 2000 miles ago.
Not having a spare car and running out of the synthetic blend I normally put in the car, I had to put 3 quarts of fossil. I now have to flush my engine as well.

Put one on at my last oil change, I don't notice any diff. They are K&N so I "assume" it is a good filter, Honda makes a damn good oil filter too tho.

I use the Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter
The following additional information appears on the filter package:
MOBIL 1 HIGH EFFICIENCY OIL FILTER
Superior Technology To Clean Oil Better
This Mobil 1 high efficiency oil filter offers the most advanced filtration technology available. Originally designed for use with Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil, this high-performance filter is also recommended for use with conventional or blended oils to increase efficiency and to provide superior performance at higher oil temperatures and pressures. All new car warranties remain in effect when Mobil 1 oil filters are used. Follow your vehicles manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals.
Synthetic Fiber Content
This Mobil 1 filter element features a synthetic fiber content that gives it one of the highest single-pass efficiency ratings available, with 98% particle removal at 10 to 20 microns. Multiple pass tests using SAE procedure J806 show Mobil 1 oil filters are 95% efficient in removing harmful contaminants from engine oil (conventional filters average 80% efficient).
Low Torque Lubricated Gasket
Mobil 1's low torque gasket is internally lubricated to provide a tight seal and for easy removal. Other features include a smooth shell design that eliminates stress points for increased durability. A heavier canister and backplate construction provides maximum protection against impulse fatigue and stress during cold engine starts. In fact, Mobil 1 filters are designed to withstand five times the normal system operating pressure.
The filter part number for the S2000 is M1-104.
Price is $10.00.

Make sure the Mobil1 filter has a one way valve (rubber gasket looking thing under the holes} to prevent filter emptying when engine is off. For some reason I thought it does not have that... could be another main brand.

Kent...consider yourself a lucky man! You will now no longer ever have to buy a filter for your car again! You need to get a hold of K&N marketing. Let them know of your dissatisfaction and the thousands of people on the net you will be telling of you failure. Offer to forward the filter for their evaluation and quate the torque you installed the filter with....you didn't overtorque it did you?
