A kit that makes power all the way to 11k
At 100,000 miles (3-4 years) i want to rebuild my motor, and would like to get 280-290 crank hp out of it...., reliably. Whens somebody gonna come out with a kit that includes cams, pistons, rods and the likes designed to rev to at least 10k, for around $4k. Have i missed something or is there just no desire for it.

haha..... na. I just figured that for the price of cams shafts, rods, pistons, engine management, etc, it shouldn't be more than 6,000 installed. Reliability i need, low cost i don't. I can save more money if thats what it takes. Sure a spoon race motor would be great... and expensive... but how reliable is a race motor.... over the next 75-100k miles?:)

Um...cams cost ~1k buy themselves, then you have to do an entire valvetrain...probably also around $1k for one that can handle 11k rpm's. Then you'll have to have a new crankshaft, etc.
I KNOW you've seen the stroker kits. They ALONE cost $4k+, and those won't handle over 9k, and are only crankshaft, pistons, and rods. Honestly, $10k is probably on the low end for an engine of those specs. Blake |
I agree. I've consulted on several race engines designed to make big power at high rpms. Here's a basic run down of costs:
1. Pistons/rods - $1000 in parts - minimum 2. Headwork - $2000 including all the nice little parts (springs, retainers, valves, etc.) 3. Cams - $1200+ because at this point you need custom stuff to make big power. 4. Labor - $1500-$2000 - All the machine work and assembly will not be cheap and you don't want to skimp here. So far you're looking at $6500 for just the basic engine. You still need a quality header ($1000 minimum) and engine management. At this point, that'll probably be an AEM EMS unless something cheaper comes out soon (fingers crossed). So another $1500 plus $500 to have it tuned. Oops, now you're up around $10k without an intake or exhaust even. If there were more S2000s with more people doing all-motor build ups, the prices would come down, no doubt. And you'd be closer to $6k total, but its just not a big market yet. UL |
IMO, our engine is spec'd pretty tight with good parts that allow it to go to a mind numbing 9k rpms. I doubt there's that much more you could do reliably without spending Big $$$, and if you're going to do that, why not just Turbo, or SC.
