Looking to get quick answer for gasket leak / coolant
Hello all,
I towed my car to an auto shop this morning because my coolant was leaking from a hose near the oil filter. The reason for the leak is because I have valve cover leak which caused the hose to rot. Shop is charging $415 for gasket and hoses. What else do I need to get serviced at this time? Thanks |
a new mechanic at those prices..but if you insist upon paying that much for that, might as well get a valve adjustment as well and check out your spark plugs.

$415 for just the parts is crazy, even if the work is included it seems excessive.
Check online prices for yourself Valve cover gasket #1 https://www.hondapartsnow.com/parts-...ead-cover.html I'm guessing it's #1 or #2 https://www.hondapartsnow.com/parts-...ater-hose.html Don't think you would need anything else, except some coolant and be sure to have it bleed correctly (search here for instructions). |
I've changed the spark plugs and all new coil packs about a month ago by myself. I'm probably going to just change the hose and take the car elsewhere.
$415 is for parts and labor |
Very unlikely the vc leak caused the hose to rot. But there are other leak sources right in that front corner that will.

Ok, good to know.
Prices: Hose: 170 Gasket: 237 Shop is going to be using all honda parts. |
VC gasket is 30 bucks and takes 15 min. What gasket are you taking about?
Those hoses are 9 bucks each. |
VC Billman. I went ahead and just requested them to do the hose with pressure test.
For the VC gasket I'm going to take it to another shop. My car is in CnC auto and they're charging 237.84 for parts/labor. I mentioned to him if I need to replace the spark plug tube and he didn't see a reason to. Same goes for a value adjustment. Another shop I called is PTuning in manassas, va and they said $250 for labor for the gasket and value adjustment (not sure if I need this). My car is DD and drives great. |
i'm having a hard time picturing a coolant hose near the oil filter.
anyway, prices aside, if you did spark plugs yourself, why not do the valve cover gasket yourself as well? it would be a good idea to get a valve adjustment at the 50K mile mark, even tho Honda says you can go to 105K. transmission fluid, diff fluid, oil change, whatever else is leaking... |
