Default Loud Suspension - Koni Shocks

last week i replaced my oem shocks with koni yellow shocks.

now, when hitting larger bumps, my suspension (especially the rear) is louder than oem...I would say about twice as loud.

my oem suspension would be loud when hitting large bumps, but the koni's seems to amplify that noise.

both oem and koni's are quiet when going over small bumps...there is no noise.

When oem hits a large bump, the noise is sort of a "dunk dunk dunk".

When the Koni hits a large bump, the noise is more of a "CLUUNK CLUUNK CLUUNK"

why would there be a difference in noise level when I only changed the shocks?

would this signal an issue with installation?

Just throwing stuff out there. Did you load the suspension when you were installing it? Did you torque down all the bolts...maybe you forgot some? Check the top hats, if they're loose you would hear a lot of noise.

the suspension was NOT pre-loaded when the bolts were tightened.

I told the installers to pre-load the suspension, but they brushed me off and said it was not necessary.

I did watch and make sure they tightened all the bolts.

does anyone know what makes the LOUD noise when hitting large bumps? what is making contact?

because even the OEM would make a cluck over large bumps, it's just that the koni's are noticeably louder...so i suppose we can start with that causes the noise when hitting large bumps...

I installed my Konis about 3 weeks ago, and had a similar issue. It was because I didn't preload the suspension when I reconnected the a-arms in the front. Since you said that the installers brushed you off, chances are that's it.

And since they brushed you off on that, I would also say they might not have retorqued the bolts to spec in the engine bay. If those are not at spec, they will cause a clunking sound when going over bumps.

thanks.

the bolts in the engine bay should be torqued to around 32 ft/lb correct?

this would also be true for the bolts for the rear shocks?

most of the loudness is coming from the rear...

How do you preload the suspension?

if your car is on stands, you can jack up the wheel until the car lifts slightly off the stand.

I have the same problem with my Koni shock. I did preload my suspension.
I even tried different springs.
Don' t know what is causing this. Glad I'm not the only one with this problem.

hey man, if you find anything out, please let me know.

It would save me a lot of trouble loosening and re-torquing my entire suspension.
