Mis-Fire

I've had this problem for awhile now. About a 3 months after I bought my 02 S2000 I got a CEL. I brought it to my local dealership and they pulled the code. turned out it was a mis-fire in all four cylinders. The dealership reccomended a fuel service, which they wanted to charger me 1000 some odd dollars for so I politely declined. I ran a basic fuel injection service through the car and it cleared the CEL for about 2 weeks and it has been coming on and off since then. Anyone know a solution to this problem short of replacing the injectors?

Stealership hard at work...

Could be a number of things, coil packs, injectors, plugs.

This problem isn't the first, so someone should have some insight

I thought coilpacks at first too but, I forgot to mention in the previous post that the dealership also did a burn test and told me about contaiminated gasoline. I find that hard to believe considering I've gone through countless tanks and the problem still exists. So someone told me the injectors could be severely clogged. Just trying to get more ideas in on this one.

Hmmm looks like I might be on my own

What P-code came up exactly????

GraveS2000 08-22-2007 09:38 AM

I don't know the exact P-code the dealership didn't give me the code. They said teh mis-fire was across the board though. I can try to go to autozone and get the code pulled but so far none of their diagnostics have worked on my car.

Get the Code and search, you might be suprised

The codes for misfires are : P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304. I am trying to figure out how to get it taken care of also...

right I searched the codes. I don't know exactly which one my car is throwing. But the car runs fine I don't feel any missing except for at idle and even then its very slight. Its more a nuisance that the light keeps coming on and off every few weeks.

I had these same CEL codes about 2 months ago. At first the engine was idling rough, then it'd die at idle at times. Finally, the CEL came on and I panicked. I read up on it and found out that it's not as severe if the CEL's solid and not flashing.

After reading up, I noticed that there were 3 main possible problems that may have caused the CEL: dirty/old fuel injectors, old spark plugs and the dreaded bent valves scenario.

I tried tackling the fuel injectors myself. Everything came out ok and I cleaned up the injectors pretty good. When I reassembled everything, I found out the hard way that I had lost an o-ring from the fuel line going to the fuel rail. That pretty much gave my engine bay a gasoline bath. Could've set the car on fire, but I figure if the car caught fire, there's insurance to replace the car, right? Just kidding.

After doing that and resetting the ECU, the CEL came back, so I bought myself some new spark plugs.

I installed the spark plugs, but again, the CEL came back, so I took it down to the shop and had them do a leakdown test. Sure enough, the numbers were lacking.

Turns out I overrevved on a downshift a while ago and displaced some valve seats and messed up all 8 of my exhaust valves and valve guides.
$1800 and 2 weeks later, I got my car back. No CEL, idles smooth and it pulls harder than I what I had gotten used to.

Don't wanna scare you with my story, but get it checked out. You're missing a lot of power if you're misfiring.

Good luck!
