Default need help possible diesel in gas tank

I stepped out this today for a morning jog and noticed that my gas cover was open. So I went to go check and it was pried open and I notice a smell of diesel. What should I do? I haven't turned on the car and what are the possible damages that could happen having diesel in gas engines?

^^ I was thinking of doing that, just wondering what will actually happen if diesel does reach ignition with a gas motor?

I've never experienced this.
nor do I know the proper procedure.

but

I would drain the tank.

Fill it with gas - drain it again....

LOTS of money but I'd rather pay to flush it out a few times than the consequences of diesel getting through it.

I'd try to get to 'Billman' for his opinion, since he's one of our experts. My $.02 is that the effect depends on % of diesel to gas. It won't ignite, like gas, so I'm guessing it would act like oil in your gas (think 2 cycle engine) with alot of smoke. Probably the biggest problem would be with your catalytic converter. Before you siphon, I'd try to pull a sample and see if there's a place to get a quick analysis done, or siphon a gallon out and put it into a lawn mower or something like that to see how it burns..
