Oil Consumption Improvement

I guess there are different ways to skin a cat. Yes it has reduced oil consumption but it's abit of a bandaid solution to me. Modern synthetics I guess allows us the best of both worlds. Try a 90w it will do wonders

I've been just using the common weight 10w-30 (Castrol Edge Syn,) ever since I've had my S2k (about 2 years now). But, I'd love to decrease oil-consumption and my oil-change is coming very soon. Would the thicker 5w-40 help any?
I am in SoCal climate (no snow, never below freezing), so I don't think I need a thin oil.

I'm at 210,000 and have finally felt a sense of victory in finally reducing oil consumption.

On a very interesting note, on a 2007 LS460 with 105,000 miles, oil consumption on Mobil 1 0w20 was one quart per 2,000 miles. Switched to Mobil 1 5w20 and oil consumption reduced very dramatically to one quart every 7,000 miles.
I honestly can't imagine there would be that much difference between a 0w20 and 5w20 of the same Mobil 1 brand.

I am happy for you. I know how annoying it can be. At that mileage, really the engine owes you nothing.

Since you have the M1 15/50 go and use that up in the 50/50 mix that you talked about in your first post. Your S will be just fine on that mix, I would also go and try to find some Delo LE CJ-4/SM 15/40. I'm up in Sacramento and have used that oil in my S both summer and winter. It's getting harder to find the CJ-4/SM oil now that the new SN oil's are out there. SN oil will never see the inside of my S that is why I have enough SM oil for about 100k miles(use the SM in my motorhome to). Just about any SM oil in 10/40 or 15/40 will work good in the S and if you can find a high mileage SM oil, that would be even better in your S.
Here is a good calculator to find what mixing two oils will be and also what % of each oil you need to get the cSt@100c that you want. I don't worry about the cSt@40c to much. I don't beat on the S until its warmed up and those who don't wait for the car to warm up are on borrowed time anyway.

It looks like your mix of 0/40 and 15/50 will be a little thinner at 100c than Mobil1 10/40 high mileage oil, your mix will have a cSt@100c of 15.25 and the 10/40 high mileage has 16 cSt@100c .

The more oil that gets to the cat, the faster the cat will fail CA smog test. That is why the new SN oil's has such low Z and P in their add package, if the car uses oil the cat won't go bad near as soon. Some diesel engines are having big problems with the new CK-4 oil's that they are suppose to use and with a new engine costing 20k or more you know thats going to hurt the bottom line.

besides the cat issue just discussed, it's quite the nuisance to check the oil level so frequently and top off so often, it's also expensive.
it also increases the risk that you forget to check timely and drive the car on low oil.

Adding fresh oil may help with continuing to keep additives up to proper concentration, but contaminants in the oil from combustion will be relatively unaffected. Concentration of different additives will change unexpectadly as well.
