I have 147k and track the car frequently. If I can't check the oil then I shouldn't be driving the car. Some weekends I add 2qt to replace lost oil, non track weekends the car uses around .8qt/1k miles. I use to think about what I add, now I don't even think of it, it is just part of owning this car.

I just did an oil change. Same 10w-30 and same brand I've been using since I've owned it, Castrol Edge... but the "High Mileage" version this time and for the first time.

I wonder if the "High Mileage" variety will make any difference in oil consumption. The back of the bottle specifically states it helps with decreased "oil burn off" and leaks and improved mpg. Of course, that might be just marketing.

I've read "high mileage" oil has higher levels of zinc and phosphorus (to help with cleaning internals?)

Well it use to. If you got some SM high mileage you have higher Z/P but the new SN oil, high mileage or not has reduced Z/P .

ROD
p.s. ZDDP(zink/phosphorus) is a Anti-wear additive not a detergent

if you're down 2 quarts, you're too low.

high mileage won't make a difference with oil consumption compared to using a comparable quality synthetic.

high mileage oils have additives that make your rubber swell. this may or may not be a good thing, depending on the unique situation of your car. it's caused problems for some people, and solved some problems for others. my advice is if you don't have any leaks, probably better to avoid the high mileage rubber swelling additives.

mobil 1 15w50 has higher levels of zinc and phosphorous than it's 0w40 counterpart. better engine protection, however increase catalytic converter wear. my take is that catalytic converters are cheap to replace, the engine is not.

I don't just go the whole weekend and add two quarts, lol, I check and add between sessions. Two quarts is about what I go through though.

I know some who use Delo 400 SD 15/30 with good results. They don't want to move up to 15/40 because their cars call for 5/20 or 0/20, but they did this for oil usage between oil changes.

Just wanted to give an update:

History: Had my AP1 for a little more than 2 years and have always been using the same Castrol Edge 10w-30 (Regular version). My average oil consumption was about 1qt per 1500 miles (1400-1700 miles).

Switched to the "High Mileage" version (same brand/type - Castrol Edge 10w-30) and it significantly improved. I'm at 1700 miles in right now, but I still have about 3 "X"s left on the dipstick... so, it only burned about half a quart of oil in 1700 miles, instead of a full 1 quart.

I am guessing, since it went 1700 miles on half a quart, it can go another 1500 miles at least until it hits "L".

Summary:
Regular Castrol Edge = about 1500 miles per quart
High Mileage Castrol Edge = about 2500 miles per quart (this is conservative... I can probably get 3000 miles)

Additionally.. ever since I switched to "High Mileage," the car has been running a looot smoother and quieter!

Hi mileage oil has some components that can reduce consumption like seal conditioners, additional cleaners, different viscosity specs, and higher quality base stocks compared to the base oils, if it works for you I say keep using it.
