Oil filter question/loose oil filters
I was reading when installing a new filter you can do "7/8 a turn." I couldn't find the correct size oil filter socket so I bought a strap wrench.
My confusion comes from do I basically hand tighten it until I get some resistance then use the strap wrench and do almost a full another turn with resistance?
I didn't think installing a filter was complex but I read in other forums with the S2K it needs to be a very exact method or my car will catch fire.

The filter is marked with 1 through 8 text along the circumference.
Screw the filter on until you feel it start to touch the mating surface, you want it to feel like the whole ring has started to touch, not just one side of the filter.
STOP.
Whatever angle you are looking at the filter at, note the number, lets say its three.
Tighten the filter until the 2 is in the position the 3 was, or 7/8th turn after contact.
But yea you got the idea in your first post. Just check the number markings on the filter so you can clock your turns easily

I guess the "7/8th a turn" is confusing me I am trying to visualize how much of a turn that is. To me a "turn" would be a full 360 so 7/8 would be like 90% of that?
Or would a "turn" be more of a 180 than 360?

(360 / 8) * 7 = 315°
Like I mentioned, there are numbers around the oil filter. marked 1 through 8.
each number represents 1/8th turn. if you tighten from above, and the gasket touches flat, look at the number ring and see which one is closest to you, this time lets say its 5. Now tighten it, until you can see 6 where 5 used to be .. then 7...8...1..2..3..4. Or 7/8ths of a turn. if you turned it back to 5 that would be a whole turn, or 8/8ths.

So. Basically hand tighten the filter until I feel the seal touch. Then whatever number is facing me I turn the filter tightly until I am 1 number behind whichever number was facing me when the seal made contact?
I kinda feel like people are being overly-cautious and I'm sure tightening it by hand until you feel confident its tight enough will be just fine, but I guess it's best to just do it the 100% correct way.
