Petrol Fuel Cap Leak? Fuel on side of car...
Hi guys,
Just a quick one, I've only had this happen once But I filled up with fuel (max) and put the cap back on as tight as I could, I do have some fairly steep hills on my commute which is what I have put this down to, but surely it's not right (!) Does my cap look normal to you guys? It's a 2001 car, I wonder if the thread part is supposed to come off? Haha. Perhaps I could try another cap in the meantime? Pretty sure you'll get a warning on the dash board, maybe a CEL, if there's a bad seal on the fuel filler. "Proper" fill technique is to stop fueling when the nozzle cuts off -- but we all fill more than that. :) New fuel cap is inexpensive.

did you fill past the first click of the pump ?
A number of ap1's had deformed fill pipe threads on the fill neck, mine had that and the cap would stop before it was totally tight/closed. I replaced the fill pipe with an ap2 one. |

I replaced the fill neck on the two ap1's I have owned - there is a tsb - see attached. Also, I make it a habit never to top off the tank at the pump. When the automatic shut off happens I stop. I have had zero problems with this sort of thing since. |
Had the same thing happen on my car when I did some autocrossing on a nearly full tank.
Replaced the cap with a new and it has never happened after that. |

It's never thrown up a CEL. I can't remember if I filled it totally or not, but probably did on that occasion!! From now on I will stop at first click and see how I get on. Out of interest, where is the best place to get a new fuel cap if it happens again? Ebay and the likes don't seem to have any, I'd only want an OEM one haha. Cheers all |

Any Honda dealer will have or can get the fuel filler cap.

I had the same probelem, the OEM filler cap stoped to early. I solved the problem in a simple way, i replaced the OEM cap with a cheap one from STANT and, for comparison and beause it was so cheap, Motorad. Both caps screw one like they should, completly thight without problems. Is it the fuel filler neck or the OEM filler cap that causes proplems? After my expirience i think the OEM filler cap is the problem. But i am maybe wrong. |
