Default Rattle at 2500-3500 rpm

Hi All,

I’m a relatively new owner (6 months ‘02 80k mi) and have been loving this car since it replaced my NA Miata. Only issue I’ve had pop up is this engine rattle (see video). After reading the forums I’m assuming it is the Timing Chain Tensioner but just wanted to see if anyone thinks it might be something else (if it were just the TCT, wouldn’t it be likely that I hear the rattle at idle?). Thanks!

It’s hard to tell from videos but that’s not what mine sounded like. I would recommend taking a long screwdriver and using it as a stethoscope and putting it on various parts of your engine to see where it’s louder. That sounds more like a knock to me than the typical tct rattle

good luck

ps - if you have access to a harbor freight they also sell automotive stethoscopes for a couple of bucks that come in real handy

I don't think it's the timing chain tensioner. For me, when the TCT was worn, and the car was warm from at least 20+ mins of driving, it would always be noisey at idle.

I replaced that shit with OEM like 4 times over 70,000 miles before I switched to the ballade sports one. Havent had any problems since.

Hopefully you won't have any of the catastrophic failures others have experienced with the ballade tct.

I can't seem to find anything about this. Any related threads or links you can provide? I've had it for a few years now.

I found a few, I think I'll get the billman for peace of mind.

Well thats the thing, you won't know there are any issues until there is irreversible damage, and the damage, and the symptoms, wouldn't show up right away. The Ballade takes a more is better approach, and applies more tension than stock to the chain. That just causes more wear in this very sensitive timing system.

Just because the stock one wears out prematurely and doesn't apply enough tension, doesn't mean the solution is to apply more tension than the system was designed for.

Any issues Ive found with the Ballade TCT on s2ki were related to the pin wearing down and the metal being too soft, which was resolved in later versions of their TCT, post 2014, since it was made from hardened steel.

Is there another issue that causes catastrophic failure that I don't know about? At the moment not considering replacing the ballade anymore.
