Default Rear bearing shot

Hi all,

I have a MY02 S2K and owned the car for 10 years. About 2 years ago my passenger side rear bearing went bad and I had it replaced though Honda service. I'm currently having the issue again. It's the same sound and I know the bearing is gone. Anyone know why this happened? Also, should I replace the hub and bearing and get a new axle nut?

My car is also lowered on swift springs.

Thanks

Bearing goes bad because it's either not installed properly, they re-used the hub, or they didn't tighten the axle nut enough. Hopefully you have a warranty on the repair.

i'll bet they didn't use the s2ki approved axle nut torque spec- torque to eom spec, then go another 60 degrees with the nut face properly lubed with a thin layer of grease.

I recall that they only changed the bearing and not the hub and probably didn't torque it to spec.

That is the root cause. You need to replace both the hub and bearing when it goes bad. It adds to the parts cost, but not the labor cost of the job.

I had a dealer install mine some years ago and three year of spirited driving and I was doing it. As near as I can tell they reused the hubs and failed to get them fully torqued. I stopped using dealer shops.

It's ok to reuse the hubs if you're swapping wheel bearings as preventative maintenance. But if there's any brinneling or scratches it needs to be replaced. This usually happens after the bearing starts howling.

I disagree. The act of installing the bearing by pressing the bearing on the hub deforms the hub slightly and when removing the bearing, the race seat needs to be removed, that too damages the hub seat. So it is cheaper to install a new 150 hub, then to do it again later.

It is cheaper to do both once, then to do it twice. It is the cost of labor here.

I went ahead and ordered rear hub/bearing and axle nut from hardtopguy. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to get here. My bearing is making all kinds of noise.

I agree that it's better to do everything in one go, just for peace of mind. I'm not sure I see how the hub could deform by being pressed into the bearing inner race. Is the cast iron hub really that soft vs the relatively thin inner bearing race? Also how much distortion are we talking about here? .0001"?
