Replacing Clutch pressure plate necessary?
 

When doing a clutch job, is replacing the pressure plate always needed?

Or can you get away with just replacing the clutch disc and bearing?

Yeah, you can reuse it.

It's a fair job to access the clutch, which involves cash if you're paying for somebody to do it. For my money I think it's worth doing the job properly and replacing all of the parts. If the used parts are in working order they can be re-installed but I guess the question becomes how much life do they have left - and then you might be up for another clutch job sooner rather than later.

That's an interesting thread. I was also thinking about the same thing: is the pressure plate really a piece that wears ?
Due to repetitive movements, the flexible metal parts may "wear" along the time ?
Billman's experience seems to prove that the oem one can handle multiple disc changes. Good news.

If the pressure plate isn't glazed with hot spots, re use it.

While yes, they can be re-used if in good shape, if I am taking the time to pull the tranny to swap a clutch, the entire assembly is getting replaced. If it were a 1 hour job to take it back apart again, I may do it differently.

The PO of my car replaced the clutch with an Exedy so called oem type piece of junk. Maybe the disk was worn out and needed to be replaced, and as crappy as the Exedy disk is, it was probably better than the worn out oem one (for a little while at least, until it drops a spring).

But the crappy pp? They would have been far better off keeping the oem one. They tossed a servicable and superior part in the trash, replacing it with crap.

Is it necessary to resurface the PP to reuse?
