I'd imagine a veteran truck driver could skip gears without damage.

It all comes down to timing.

I can tell you that I was at an event and missed 3rd, grabbing 5th a couple of times (up hill weird angle) and when I went to drive home I didn't have 6th gear. I was totally blocked out, even at rest. I did the Billman trick and finally got 6th back, so yeah skip shifting is for sure bad

Is this an inherent design of manual transmissions or is it possible to change with newer technology? The reason I ask is because I DD a 2015 MK7 VW GTI 6MT and it has a 'gear selector' to save gas. There are times when I hold a lower gear a little long and the gear selector indicates I should shift from 3rd to 5th, or 4th to 6th for example. Don't recall ever seeing 3-6 but it's possible. If skipping gears hurt the transmission, why would VW do that?

not sure if it's telling you to skip the gears, but rather to get to that gear, so you can still row through the gear sequentially. keep in mind, you don't need to release the clutch pedal more than once, just row the stick through the gears sequentially.

Yes, but most ppl wouldn't know that VW means you should row through every gear to get to that gear (w/o engaging the clutch at each gear) unless (1) it is in the owner's manual, and (2) if they read the manual in detail (unlike me). After all, that's how this thread came up.

Read the manual? Whattzat? BTW, there is nothing in any S2000 owners' manual I can find regarding this topic which makes this forum even more valuable.

I often shift from 4th to 6th when merging onto a highway, as I am well into the traffic speed in 4th - 5th seems unnecessary as I have no need to accelerate. Shifting from 4th to 6th is like butter...
I get the impression this is might not be a a good thing to do?

That's what this thread says. Just run the lever 4-5-6. No need to let the clutch out in 5th but hit it to save the wear on the 6th synchro.
