Tips for solo transmission reinstall?
#11
i have done this many many times by myself with only jacks and jack stands. It takes 2 jacks and you have to pump the jacks with your feet while you hold and try to push the transmission in. yes its a pain in the ass but it can be done. i have since bought the harbor fright $90 TRANSMISSION JACK and it makes this whole process way easier. For anyone doing this at home i highly recommend the transmission jack.

Alright gentleman, I grabbed the jack I linked above on the way home. It came out to $88 after tax, I think, with the coupon.
Getting the transmission on the jack sucked since there isn't enough clearance to pass the trans under when vertical, let alone on top of the jack. I got the bellhousing up on a piece of wood then put a sponge under the mount so it would slide across the floor instead of digging in as I pushed the transmission forward to get it on the jack.
From there I tried to lift the trans straight up but found the engine needs to be tilted back, then it is just a matter of lining up the input shaft and pressing the transmission up from the tail shaft to get everything in. The car is almost back together now, just need to put the header back on before lifting the subframe up.
Thank you all. I appreciate it.

This is my method, I have a harbor freight trans jack but I don’t like how tall it is and getting the trans on the jack under the car. Doing it this way I can control the angle by hand on the back, jack with my foot and had it stabbed in a few minutes. Once you get the shaft in the splines still supported with the jack, engage the throw out bearing and it will suck up all by itself effortlessly. I know you already got it, just sharing my experience!

I use two jacks, one at the front of the transmission and another by the driveshaft output. I disconnect the 2 bolts on either motor mount, which gives me a little flexibility with moving the motor back towards the firewall, and then slowly move the transmission up, with the front of the transmission being a little higher than the back, which allows me to move the input shaft past the throwout bearing. Basically, you use your legs to pump the jacks and slowly move the two jacks towards the motor, giving clearance at the top of the transmission and firewall, with the motor rocking back, allowing the input shaft to marry with clutch disc and pilot bearing. Makes it a pretty quick job by yourself.
