Tranmission Issue
 

Car is on the original clutch at 101,XXX miles.

Here's my issue I discovered yesterday.

On a level surface, and car is running I move the shifter into 1st gear (not engaging the clutch) allowing the shift gate to prevent access into first. My car moves forward until the shifter is in neutral. In other words I push the shifter towards 1st and it moves the car forward. Letting it go back to neutral, the car stops moving. During this test I never depress the clutch pedal. I determine a level surface as one driven on everyday and when I apply the brakes car doesn't move, brakes off the car still doesn't move.

Is this in any way normal?

Why would you shift into any gear while the engine is running without depressing the clutch pedal?

What do you mean normal? Cause sitting still in a running car and playing with the shifted isn't normal, its what 5 year olds do....

OP, thats interesting...whens the last time you replaced your clutch? Is it engaging when you do press it?

Yes its normal. And that is really stupid. The syncro is made to slow the mainshaft, thats it. you just used it to push a 2800 pound car forward. Great way to burn them up fast.

Thats the equivalent of putting another 100k on the syncro. i'm not exaggerating.

There is no such thing as a shift gate that can block access to first, or any gear.

You don't need a clutch to put a car into gear, just appropriate rpm/speed. What you are doing is equivalent to pushing an eraser across paper though - you're just wearing out parts.

Uh oh. Shouldn't have done that. Thanks for the advice.

Uh oh..... Time to look for another trans and new clutch kit!!
