Oil Consumption Improvement
Wanted to share something with the community that improved my oil consumption.
First of all, i'll give some background into my experience.
2003 ap1, 210,000 miles, owned since new. oil consumption has been gradual and linear since new, starting at one quart every 3,000 miles, down to one quart every 350 miles.
rebuilt head twice, at 80,000 miles and 180,000 miles (bent valves and worn valve guides the first time, replaced with oem. worn valve guides the second time replaced with aftermarket guides. Oil consumption did not improve either time so i never was losing oil through the guides).
i've tried pcv remedies and catch can - was never losing oil through the pcv system.
i've ran amsoil most of it's life, and i've tried ALL oils due to posts where people claim so and so oil fixed their consumption - yea i tried them all and none of them worked (castrol gtx, castrol synthetic, shell rotella, pennzoil, valvoline, motul, liqui-moly, etc.) ran 5w-40, sometimes 10w-30.
only thing that has helped with oil consumption were krank vents. brought my oil consumption to nothing. however, i didn't like what it was doing making clucking sounds at idle so i took them out - oil consumption resumed. this at least helped me attribute the oil loss to the rings.
fast forward to the present, i've finally found an oil and has reduced my oil consumption to half the rate, and this is from only using one quart as a top off oil. Mobil 1, 15w50.
I will add another quart of Mobil 1, 15w50, which will make it 2 quarts in the system, and report back on the rate of consumption.
on my next fresh oil change, i plan to use half mobil 1, 0w40 and half mobil 1, 15w50, to get somewhere in the 7.5w45 range, as i'm not entirely comfortable with 100% 15w50 weight in the system.
look forward to other users that want to try this and report back with your findings as well.
the good news is that mobil 1, 15w50 is only $22 at WalMart.

The even better news is there is a rebate going on right now for $12 back per 5qt jug. The limit is 2 rebates per address, so $24 total. Everything can be filled out online which is nice too.

the only problem with this is that i don't have a "pre 15w50" sample to compare the results with, and being that my engine is so old at 210,000 miles, i don't know what I would contribute any wear findings to (the new oil mix, or just the old age of the engine).

I've been just using the common weight 10w-30 (Castrol Edge Syn,) ever since I've had my S2k (about 2 years now). But, I'd love to decrease oil-consumption and my oil-change is coming very soon. Would the thicker 5w-40 help any?
I am in SoCal climate (no snow, never below freezing), so I don't think I need a thin oil.

Jah2000,
I'd try a 10/40 high mileage oil and if that doesn't slow the oil consumption down enough, I'd put in one qt of straight 40 wt oil when its time to add a qt. I run 10/40 h/m in my '06 and with over 130k miles on it it still uses no oil between oil changes(7500 mile). To bad a lot of AP1's uses so much oil.

5w-40 won't make a difference, stick to what you use now, your seals will thank you.
