Transmission play, seems like large backlash between gears?
Hi, I tried to do some research on this problem that I noticed with my S2000, but I could not find any definitive answer of what could cause this problem.
SO here I am...
If you don't know, My S2000 is 2004 with 168,000km, I recently fitted 4.625 final drive with a full diff bearing and seal rebuild along with rear drive shafts and a prop shaft.
My problem is in the transmission itself as when the car is jacked up , when I rotate the prop shaft with my hand it takes a good 90 degrees of rotation before anything will move in the tranny , and gives out really loud clunk sound.
It seems to me like the backlash between gears has increased dramatically in the transmission because even when I am rolling the car backwards and change direction it gives out this huge clunk...
And just to mention that I also have ACT Flywheel and ACT Clutch plate + ACT Bearing along with ACT Pressure Plate, ( But i don't think its the clutch since it drives great )
I found a video which show exactly what I am talking about:
Anyone had this problem on their s2000?
Thank You,
Regards.

Please confirm this is what you are doing:
Trans in gear, clutch not pressed, e brake not engaged, rear tires in the air, rotate propshaft by hand until trans freeplay stops you. When turning propshaft any further would require engine to also rotate.
So its taking you 90 degrees of propshaft rotation to find both ends of that trans freeplay.
Is that correct?
If it is inside trans, its probably not going to be easy to fix. Not easy to get to. Maybe buy a good used one, then try and fix yours. Take your time. Learn. Acquire tools needed for internals. In the end, sell one of them for what you paid for used one. You will be able to still drive your car while you are working on trans.

I noticed about the same amount of free play on my car as in the video, but always just kept driving it like that.
Would like to know too if it's normal or not.
I do sometimes hear a bit of a clunk when transitioning between accel/decel, could be related.
However you are saying yours can rotate 90 degrees? That is A LOT more than what can be seen in that video, and seems like a serious issue IMO.

Hi,
I was talking with one of the lads at my mechanic and they told me that some transmissions have backlash setting or it can be set by tightening gears in tranny?
Wondering weather the s2000 is the same, Anyone knows?
Has anyone have this done before or fixed this type of noise?
Thanks
