Default Upgrading differential parts.

What is the weakest part of the differential? Is it the housing, the ring gear, the final drive gear, the pinion? I've heard conflicting statements about what is likely to break first. Yesterday I broke my diff... Its completely shot, but I haven

My first one succumed to the weak bearing cap mounts in the early housing. The next one was my fault but I'm not telling you why. My view is that although a bit dainty, the final drive and differential will hold up to all but the most radical FI modifications. I drove the first one though 60,000 + miles with a supercharger and more track days than any other car I've owned.

This last time, I just replaced it with an '04 diff. It has a reinforced housing that looks to be every bit as good as the Comptech unit. I got the whole thing into the car for $700 plus shipping.
where did you get a '04 rear end for $700?

So the weak bearing cap mounts would be part of the housing i guess and come with the comptech housing upgrade. What all did your '04 diff come with? Was it more than just the housing? That's a great price if its the whole differential. What was broken on your diff after you blew it?

the weak point is the pinion gear. you'll shear off the teeth on it eventually.

I've been reading that the pinion gear backs out from the housing. So I guess if the housing is stronger then the pinion gear will hold up.. at least until I turbo my s2k to 1000hp

although im beginning to loose faith in even upgrading this diff. Maybe I'll just modify a mustang diff. I heard you can change the final drive gears in those things in like 30 minutes. But realistically, I guess I'm going to just get the reinforced diff housing from comptech and replace the final drive gear, pinion, and ring gear with the 4.77 set. Hopefully nothing else will be broken.

Send a PM to xviper first asking about the difference between the Comptech and the OEM unit from '04 onward. You may change your mind.

There's a valid reason why I chose the '04 for my car.
why not see if we can have xviper post some of the info here in the forum, i bet there are a lot of people (like myself) who wanna know whats up.

Can you use an 04 diff with no prop shaft change?
The prop shaft is a new part number (but that might be due to the transmission end).
