Default Valve adjustment intervals

I have been finding ONLY on AP2s, slightly tight valves. However on this last 2005, original owner, engine never apart, I found this:

Exhaust valves tight

.009
.006
.005
.002

they should be .010.

I have always recommended all s2ks get the valves adjusted at 10k miles on the odometer, and 75K intervals after that. The damage may be done on this one, but so far so good. We may have caught it in time.

I recommend all s2ks ESPECIALLY 2006-2009 to have their valves professionally inspected and adjusted.

Good call. Mine were all slightly tight the first time I pulled the VC at 52k as well. Not nearly that tight though! I had .070-.090 everywhere.

I plan on getting a valve adjustment in a few more miles. Mine is an 05 AP2, so hopefully I won't have any issues. I thought the interval in the manual was much more?

Yeah I think the manual calls for adjustment around 100k. I have 73k on my AP2. I should probably have mine done to be on the safe side. Third owner... 100% stock car w/ 100k Honda Care warranty. Should be good but we'll see.

Yes, the manual recommendation is a bit long. Over the years, I've seen quite a few people post up about bad adjustments on nearly new cars out of the factory.

Mind was adjusted at 112K mark but not sure if it was previously adjusted before I bought it at 111K mile mark. I still feel like it needed another one because of some valve sound I hear when engine is running.

hello all. Yes I recommend everyone check their AP2 clearance soon. My car was acting up and had all kind of funny reading such as MAP sensor reading high, my LTFT and STFT was going off the chart, running rich, and so forth. All of this cause my car to stall at idle when approaching a light.

I have 90k on my car and my is a 07.

At first it seem it was an o2 sensor and then a map sensor issue so all was replaced however didn't resolve the issue.

Finally had a chance to check the valve. All of the exhaust valve were tight. I couldn't put in a .009 feeler gauge and it was the lowest gauge I had. So I readjust and what do you know, map sensor reading is back to normal. No more stalling approaching a stop. I haven't checked my MPG yet but before adjustment, it was slowly declining from 28-29 down to 21-22 mpg. Another note, most of this was at idle.

Anyways, billman250: do you think I did any damage to my valve? I did a compression check and it came out 230 across the board with maybe 1-2 difference between 2-3 cylinder.

Hope I got lucky

Tight valves will burn. If your leakdown test is ok, and you dont have a misfire, you likely stopped the problem dead in its tracks.

The customer yesterday was on his way to serious damage, but I feel he will be ok.

All s2ks with 10k or better should have the valve clearance checked.
