Is the VIN absolutely required for used ECU swap?

Exactly as the title states, do you HAVE to have the VIN from the car a used ECU was taken from in order to use it? Surely the dealership must have a way to program the keys/immobilizer.

Obviously you could defeat the immobilizer but we'd rather not, right?

+1 for info on this? I need a new ecu :( or any info on how to jsut defeat the immobilizer would do me good. sorry to the op if you feel i am jacking your thread.

come on, someone should know this.

Need a VIN to get a password required for learning keys. There is no DIY immobillzer bypass on S2ki, and there will not be.

Not sure off hand but I think the dealer can program the new/used ecu to the vehicle using all keys lost via immob menu. Maybe the ecu replacement opinion can work which would transfer you info from your old ecu to your new one with out needed the VIN from the other ecu. I will check.

Looks like it can be done with no issues. When the ecu is replaced (as long as the ecu matches for the vehicle) there might be a engine dtc for VIN not programed but can ignore that and manually input the VIN and reprogram everything to that ecu. You would have to have dealer HDS software to do it however. Good Luck!

no you do not need vin, nor keys to reset the immobilizer. i put an 02 ecu in my 00. brought it to the dealership, paid the half hour labor (it only took 15 minutes), and presto. it takes something liek 20 key strokes for the ecu to learn your driving habits.

This is locked for people posting false info. If you don't know it to be a fact, don't post it. Especially about immobilzers.

I'm a dealer tech, a VIN is required. Weather it from the donor car or yours, a VIN# is still required.

Depending what scan tool is used, the original VIN from the donor car MAY be required. There are 2 different scan tools that can be used to reprogram keys. Not every dealer tech will use a HDS, some may still have a older PGM-FI tester that will also do the job.

Not every year S2k PCM is the same. They don't all reprogram keys the same way. some can replace the PCM with 1 existing programmed key, some can't. If you want to cover your ass, bring all your keys so the dealer can make sure all will start the car.

PCM's don't learn driving habits.
