Default Vtec "surging"

I've noticed over the last thousand or two miles, that while at wide open throttle when i hit Vtec it's a nice kick but after about 1000-1500 rpm's in VTEC it slows down for about 500-1000 rpm's and then kicks back into full VTEC.

Anyone else had this problem or does anyone have a cause and a fix for it?

I think you'll have to give us more info on your car. Stock? Years? Miles?

Likely nothing to do with VTEC. Maybe you're running lean, plugs dirty, air filter dirty. Sounds like a little ECU timing issue.

You might want to whap your MAP.

Agreed with the above. I was guessing there was a VAFC involved and the A/F ratio is off. Since it is stock and there have been no changes (mods) to the car , I would check the air filter and spark plugs.

I wonder if I have your same problem... 2002 45k mi. Whenever I go WOT, (a few hundred RPM before vtec) the car just won't accelerate, will just bounce around for a bit, then go. It's been happening for a few weeks...really annoying.

I think this is similar to what mine was doing. The only difference is I had a 'light' clicking noise from the head. Maybe it's the Timing Chain like mine.

The other option is dirty fuel injectors. Go get a fuel injector cleaning. Depending on how the previous owner did or didn't take care of it... might have some gunky injectors. That confuses the ECU and you get alternating lean/rich timing retardation.
