What is With My Clutch?
Even though my dealer has replaced everthing in the clutch actuation system I still have a squeak and slight binding in the pedal when moving it slowly (like starting from rest or backing). It is not there all the time, just enough to bug me. I had the clutch TSB done (separate issue) which cured the famous 3-4000 rpm ringing for a while but it is back with a vengeance, only in 1st and 3rd gear. My car has 39000 miles.

I too have a 01 and noticed this .don't worry about this the 00,01,02 have a fairly noisy clutch...
Have talked to numerus peaple and this is normal.... |
I am getting some official attention on the squeak but it disappeared mysteriously when visiting the dealer than re-appeared as I pulled inot my driveway.

is that not always the way..
when you went to the dealer did they say it was not normal cause i have not asked anyone there, just other s2k owners with the same problem. Is it a matter that needs attention then. input appreteated. thx |
They never claimed the squeak was normal but they never hear it. They did replace the whole system about 5000 miles ago before the warranty ran out so they are prepared to stand by it. Just claiming"unable to detect" at this point.

I am getting first and second synchros replaced (grinding problem) and will get them to take a look at the clutch while they have it off then.
Will keep you posted if they find anything.. |

It is extra time and work to do a clutch job right so many don't. There is a large build-up of friction material that needs to be thoroughly cleaned from all parts and proper lubrication on reassembly must be done. Even with new components this must be done to insure smooth and quiet operation.

There is a possibility that the dealer who did the install did not use some TLC. There could be debris on the input shaft that could be cleaned up with emery or crokus cloth. The input shaft should then be lightly greased with a high temp grease such as a moly grease for the throwout bearing to smoothly slide back and forth on. The release fork should be cleaned up and lightly lubed, again with moly grease. A small amount of grease should go inside the small cup that the clutch slave piston-rod goes into as to move the release fork smoothly back and forth. Outside of using locktight on the pressure plate bolts and torqueing 1/2 turn at a time in a star pattern, I can't think of any thing else to make the clutch operation smooth other than a good flush and bleed job. Unfortunately the transmission is installed in your car and it may be unlikely that the dealer would want to redo their work. You could try doing a thorough flush and bleed. Good luck |
