Default What's up with the diff??

So, I am reading all kinds of posts saying that our diff is weak, but Jason does a poll and only ONE diff has ever broken. I also did a search for differential, and found lots of people saying that it broke, but WesMaster is the only one that broke, and that was right after an axle failure. (Ya think, perhaps, the axle failure caused it?)

The diff is a a Torsen T2. It is the same design used in a Hummer, RX-300, Miata MX-5, Supra, Camaro, Audi and tons of other cars. The design itself is extremely reliable (much more so than a clutch based diff).

So, why is everyone whining about the diff? If anything, the axles might be weak, but I see no evidence that the diff is weak.

What am I missing?

I've had two fail. The second under unusually conservative driving.

Technically, it's the differential housing that is weak. The housing is weak enough that extreme torque can cause the differential to bust the housing open, which in turn causes the rest of the differential to be destroyed.

Several have broken or have had major problems. Granted it has happened on a small % of cars but it is has happened to a number of owners. It has not all been due to abuse.

Most=Supercharger

It is the weak link in the chain unless you are doing 5-8K drops in which case it is again the weak link in the chain.

Bob, I think only two SC'd cars have busted their diffs. Comptech's with crazy magazine dude driving and Wesmaster with his own crazy self driving. Percentage wise higher than non SC'd I'm sure, but not a majority of the wasted diffs are SC'd guys by any means.
