I have not had any problems and am not really too familiar with this problem. Didn't Comptech machine new "bearing caps" for our diff. I saw spoon had mounting brackets, and I know King sells hard rubber bushings - Do any of these things offer a cure or are you saying the actual differential's bearing cup is breaking.

i am NA, never did much launching except at autox. my left bearing cap shattered. and destroyed everything inside the housing and blew a hole in the side of the housing.

Josh- so that could be prevented from happening again with the new bearing caps from Comptech correct? If it's the cap, and not the housing at least there's a fix, but if it's the bearing housing of the diff that the bearing cap bolts to, there is no current fix.

It's the bearing caps themselves, but it's not as straight forward as just getting new ones since they are machined as part of a set with the carrier. So really there's no solution yet.

Comptech is going to start selling the stronger bearing caps. And I did buy a set from them. But this will not solve all of the differential housing problems. My mechanic thinks that the bearing caps were not the weak point in my "explosion".

Okay, so let me get this striaght. I don't know much about differentials.. okay... almost nothing...

The diff is made by Torsen, right?
This diff fits into a housing where the differential itself spins, right?
I take it Honda makes this Housing?

Has anyone had a diff failure that was NOT due to the housing?

If the above is correct, and all diff problems have been due to the housing, Torsen is off the hook, and Honda has an issue. Right?

Shouldn't the diff at least be stronger than clutch grip?
Do the people with faulures have an aftermarket clutch?

If I recall correctly the S2K differential unit has a bearing cap on each side which fasten to the beefy case. The back cover in turn attaches to the case with many fasteners. Some cars have diffs like that and use the back cover to assist the bearing caps. A custom rear cover has a left and right internal extension, usually adjustable, which braces the bearing cap by physically touching it. That way the bearinf=g is located and braced by the cap and the rear cover. Spreads out the loads. You can see example pics in the Summit Racing catalog. Perhaps an s2k rear cover could be modified along these lines. Install would be very simple too!!

That is the issue for me. I've "blamed" it on the stronger clutch all the time. I love the clutch, it's just a little too good. I'm going to keep it on though.

my entire drivetrain is stock and the thing still broke. i do use my diff to its full capabilities when i go driving in the mountains, however.

E30M3, that is a possibility that has been brought up to me before. but if it's cheaper to bolt on the comptech bearing caps, then i'll do that instead. both solutions would be effective, so it's a matter of cost imho.

The question is - are the comptech ones really stronger? Just because they're CNC'ed doesn't make them necessarily any better or stronger.
