Default Winter is coming -- definitive sticky starter fix? Billman?

I have the infamous screeching starter issue that a lot of AP1/AP2s have. First few years of ownership, it was only a problem in winter (California winters, hah! So I'm talking 35-45 degrees F).

Nowadays, even when the weather is 60s-70s, I get a slight screech, so I imagine when it gets down to the 40s this winter... it's gonna be bad.

Is there a definitive, DIY fix here besides buying a new starter [that will inevitable fail again]?? Any chance of damaging the flywheel?

I remember Billman said he'd look into it. Dozens of threads, no definitive answers from anyone:

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I have heard mine a handful of times in the last year. What exactly is it?

It mostly happens in the morning (also in CA), but even more so if I haven't driven my S for a few days. Would love to find out what the solution is (other than replacing the entire starter).

Cheers,
Alex

Would definitely like to avoid putting in a new one:
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...VIN+Number+---

For an AP1, assuming the P/N are correct, they're not exactly cheap:
31200-PCX-A02 => STARTER MOTOR ASSY. (DSDHP) (DENSO) => $504.96
31200-PCX-A02RM => STARTER, CORE ID (9742809-392)(428000-3920) (RMD) => $223.17

Just watched a few 20-minute videos on taking apart a starter -- what am I doing with my life

Anyone who is replacing their starter....be VERY careful not to break the knock sensor. It's quite fragile and easy to hit with the long extension.
