We did road trips for about 13 years, with my wife and son. It was always down the east region of the USA , leaving from Canada. We always planned different sites to see each trip. We didn't have a trailer though, it was more like a Chrysler minivan, lol, and we slept in hotels. We would cover about 3000 miles on every trip, in 2-week stints.

We have travelled to many parts of the world, but I have to say those road trips were some of the best vacations we've ever had. So glad we did them when we did.

 

I’ve been itching to go on a road trip for a long time. When I was in my twenties a friend and I set out on a 2 week cross country road trip and had a blast and crammed a lot of sites into that 2 weeks. We ended up covering over 8,000 miles they were quite surprised when we returned the rental car.

 

I have been to most of the named places over the years of my road trips.

In 2007 after my first wife passed away I need to get away so I told work i was going on a road trip. I took a 33 day road trip! I only had a few places that I had to be and the rest was wherever the S took me. As much as I would like to do it again I just don’t think i am up for it plus I’m not sure where i would go….maybe Canada?

There is so much to see in this country!

 

Cars were so much more colorful and bigger back then.

 

Notice how folks were dressed? Not a pair of Pajama pants in sight! We've only been to a couple of the places featured in the video. We were just talking about hitting the road for 2-3 weeks. I don't see it happening. I get road weary pretty easily. I don't like staying 1-2 days and moving on......

 

We have been driving to Naples FL for the last 16 years. Next year will be our last year. I will be 80 and have a bad back thanks to a rear end collision caused by a distracted driver. We plan to go to other places. I can drive on short trips and on longer ones we will fly and rent a car. There are so many places we would like to see and we want to see them while we both are healthy.

 

We may have to cancel our road trip this year.

Our major road trip philosophy is always of no freeways. We drive a lot of diagonal highways. We hit all the historic markers and historic sites. We make up other road rules as well. On one trip we only ate at small town diners that started with a woman's name. We look for festivals, rodeos, anything of local interest going on when we pass through. In general we're looking at America.

 

I got the 'travel bug' out of my system in the 10 year period after high school. Saw as much of Europe as I could while in the service - France, England, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, etc., then places where 'the girls are' like Daytona Beach, Myrtle Beach, etc, while in college, and two years more in Michigan until I settled down. Other than a few select cities I am really happy just enjoying life locally.

 

These days I don't want to drive or fly more than five hours at a time. During our road trips it was easy doing 12-13 hours a day, but not any more, my wife's back can't take it either.
