Gives a whole new meaning to 'pusher'. I studiously avoid the commuter hours on trains in Tokyo.

In my experience the Chinese have no concept of personal space. I've seen in the gym locker room and in their housing preferences in Orange County, California. This explains it.

Station platform length,

I wonder if they can pass from car to car? Even if an additional car didn't line up with the platform, people could walk into the additional car from the car in front of it. Maybe it is a safety issue where each car has to have exit onto the platform. Or maybe getting people off of the additional rear car would impact the schedule.

Yes, platform length is an issue. Also, it looks like the trains are electrical. Here in DC there was a problem with having to upgrade the electrical system in order to add more cars to the train. But even then, no more than eight cars. The other thing is the frequency trains are running. I'm guessing they have done pretty much everything they can to move people in the most populated city in the world. Those pushers have been around a long time.
