Hey, those were great! My first car was a 1958 Porsche, so seeing the new ones for $3700 was quite interesting. Did anyone notice the guy playing the violin in the trunk of the Triumph Herald was Nigel Mansell.? Oh, and for a long time Phil Hill kicked around Santa Monica in a VW Beetle. So the Peugeot was a step up, I guess.

The MGA ad shows #51. Probably no other MGA has had its photo in so many ads, book covers, film and countless other publicity items than #51. It was driven by David Ash who was a wholesale sale distributor for Inskip and fantastic publicist. Known as “Mr. MG”, he was responsible for selling 5,000 MG’s and establishing 200 dealerships over his 14 years with Inskip. I met David and his fellow driver Gus Ehrman in 2004 and was always happy I got him to sign my Vintage Racers logo. He is now deceased.
For the 1956 Sebring 12-Hour race, North American BMC dealers entered three MGA’s. NY distributor, Inskip, prepared MGAs for David Ash and Gus Ehrman. The cars finished 4th, 5th, and 6th in class assuring them the team prize. Ash wrote about his 1956 experience in an article entitled “Preparing for Sebring” published in Sports Cars Illustrated. Then car #51 with its highly recognizable twin blue stripes and octagons was featured in a 1957 AMOCO film on Sebring. MGA’s took the team prize again for a first and second in class, and that is the bases for the ad posted.
Here's a shot of him sitting in #51 after it was restored by its new owner.

Just saw the GM Dream Cars exhibit at Indianapolis Museum of Art. Cars from the '30s to '50s mostly. One from 1956 had a backup camera. Bertone had a Gina (sp?) that you enter from the front. Swear you had to lay down in it. Extreme wedge car. Wish I could post pictures.
