College, Grandkids, and Assistance

We continue to contribute to college funds for the four youngest grandchildren. The oldest continues to be an off and on screw up who hasn't lived up to his potential as yet. We are no longer giving him any college financial assistance.

Not in the budget for us to contribute to their education. If we could assist in this we would. College is just so darn expensive. The second one got braces on his teeth last week. Once again we offered to assist in that department. Raising kids is expensive.

We have no children, therefore, no grandchildren. We have always joked that I bought the S2000 with the college money for the first child we didn't have. Then it was the pool for the second child we didn't have. The joke has been "how many children aren't we sending to college?" Now you are telling me I can spend more because we don't have grandchildren to support?!

We put our kids through college and paid for their weddings. They married successful men and they are successful in their careers. They do not expect any financial help from us for college and that is fine with us. The hits we took thanks to the financial melt down created a less desirable retirement. One of the reasons I have a detailing business.

Another set of no kids, no grandkids here.
I don't feel any obligation to help with our niece/nephews education or other path forward. We're fortunate to be in a position where we can give nice gifts for significant milestones in their lives and expect to continue to do that.
