I grew up about 5 miles from the beach. I spent a lot of time body surfing as a kid. As I reached the age where everyone just wanted to lie in the sun, I got bored. I spent my sophomore year of college living a few houses off the sand in Newport Beach, but almost never set foot on the sand.
Now I'd rather look at the beach from a boat offshore. I have friends who organize monthly beach barbecues during the summer, but I'd prefer to have them in someone's backyard and avoid getting sand in my food.

I used to enjoy going to the beach.
We went today however and I couldn't wait to leave.
Even with a strong breeze, I was hot.
Roasting like a weenie on the coals ain't fun.
The surf was all but dead. I can't recall the ocean being this calm.

I had a great weekend on the island. Played in the water with a little kid who was visiting with us, tried to teach a reluctant dog to swim and dug clams for dinner. The addition of a boat helps.

I remember trying to teach a few of our German Shepherds to swim. Others just took to it. Kyras learned to pull open the gate to the pool and he'd just go for a lap in the summer, when he got hot.

We just got back from Myrtle Beach. We love the ocean and my ideal day is just lying on the beach and being in the water. As a kid we went to Atlantic City every year, i have pictures of my mother and aunts wearing their fur coats on the boardwalk being pushed in the carts. Mr. Peanut, auctions, the diving horse on Steel Pier all great memories of the boardwalk. After getting married Beth and I went to Rehoboth Beach every year with our kids for 20 years. My son is now planning a family reunion in Rehoboth for next year and we are hoping to have over 40 family members attend.
FYI - I just watched on TV "America's Greatest Boardwalks" and the reason boardwalks are built with wood is because hotel owners were upset with all the sand being brought into their hotels and realized if they used wood most of the sand would fall though the cracks and not be brought into the hotel.

I am not a beach person. I enjoy a walk on a deserted beach but I don't enjoy salt water swimming all that much and I don't own a boat. (Wish I did...a sailboat, not a stinkpot.)
But I've lived near water most of my life. I grew up a few miles from Keuka Lake and lived across the street from the lake while in high school. I've spent most of my adult life in Jacksonville, FL, Mobile, AL, and here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I lived in Tallahassee for awhile and I really missed the water. Jacksonville was a bit of a drive over to the beach but I worked in a building on the St. Johns river and crossed it regularly navigating around town.
I really enjoy commutind up and down Highway 90 with nothing between the highway and the beach but a sidewalk. But right now I tend to avoid 90. The beach is swarming with cleanup crews and that somehow takes away from the pleasure of the drive.

I'm just sayin'... If I want to go fast and feel the sea breeze in my face I'll just drive down US90 with the top down. If I wanted to get to where the fish are asap, I'd be interested in a power boat. But sailing is much more of an end in itself.
