I can remember a stretch where lunch was a couple Hood Ice cream sandwiches.
egads school food was awful.
At least that was until we started getting licenses.which opened up some other avenues for consumption.
We were "the good kids", we ran the schools computer systems and AV equipment.
I can remember walking out the front door of the high school when one of the vice principals intercepted us.
"where you going boys?"
"Burger King, You want anything?"
" no, just don't be gone too long"

lol we used to go to either bk or johns hot weiners. Problem when you went to johns you came back smelling like the fry grille. We also had a small deli nearby our auto shop teacher used to send us there to get him a Rueben.

Our granddaughter eats well. Has never been too picky. Rick makes a vegetable chicken soup (TONS of veggies in it), and when she was small there was never an issue of what was in it, except for kidney beans. For a while she would not eat them, but that was a phase. Not sure what school lunches are, for her, but when we take her to dinner she will try different food.

The grandson is all about hot dogs, pizza, chicken nuggets and burgers. Plenty of junk, but a few healthy choices mixed in. I think he takes a lunch to school, but it's not the healthiest stuff.

This past week in ME there was "Ring Ding" cake on the menu. Damn I should have splurged. I remember the day when Ring Dings were THE after school snack.
