Oh and don't carry your SS card, right? But what is your ID number on your Medicare card? Have they changed that yet?
If you are thinking of doing a credit freeze, as I understand it, you need to do it on all three of the major sites for it to be effective and then there is a small fee for the on/off times to unfreeze it.

As yet I have not contacted any of the big three to freeze credit. I'm wondering how many here have done that? I keep thinking I probably should.

I've done one of the three so far for each of us. $5.00 fee on each. Fees vary state to state. Equifax is supposed to be offering free freezing, and supposed to have more to offer in the next few months.

PS I heard today that if you want to have an online SS account, you should open before you freeze credit.

I signed up for what they were offering on line.

Last week I got an Equifax email spoof asking me to send personal information to start my protection.

Here is an article from Forbes on steps you can take to protect yourself. I'll have to look into these further.

Bill, etc... here's my notes on the topic so far. I'd be glad to hear of anything I've missed.

Equifax Hack Notes

Sign up for Equifax’s free year in TrustedID Premier (done)
Reportedly monitors all 3-credit bureaus
Provides copy of Equifax Report
Allows credit lock *
$1 million in ID theft insurance
Searches suspicious web sites for your SSN

Realize thieves will have no problem waiting till the year is over

Check all future bank accounts statements closely
Check all credit card statements closely
Consider changing passwords and login info

Credit bureau contact numbers:
Equifax: 1-800-349-9960
Experian: 1‑888‑397‑3742
TransUnion: 1-888-909-8872.

Consider getting a current credit report from each agency for a baseline

Consider credit freeze at each agency. Prevent new creditors from accessing your credit report, unless you give permission; subject to regulation by each state and use a PIN based system for authentication.

* Equifax to offer free lifetime credit lock by January 31, 2018. Newer credit freeze method using modern authentication techniques from iPhone’s, etc.

File tax return early, since they have your SSN

Watch out for scams

If hacked file FTC report at https://www.identitytheft.gov/Assistant#
