That was not a good high resolution photo, as you can see. I just wanted to show that style feeder in action. One orange per day. 1/2 in AM and the other 1/2 goes out at dinner time (ours).

Lainey, We have no shortage of things under the ground (moles, mice, etc.) or things running around above ground (chipmonks, rabbits, squirrels, etc.) Mostly they like to mess with Donna's flower gardens with homes, tunnels, etc. We have always had a high concentration of earth worms so I suspect we'd have many of these critters even without the feeders. Sure beats snakes and gaters.

Scooter/Dave Rick has a similar method to control rodents....A few chipmunks had to meet an untimely demise.

dlq/Dave, I'm OK with most of those critters, even an occasional mouse is OK as long as it's not in the house....but rats.........ewwwwwwwwwww. Oh, garden snakes are OK...gators, not so much.

My seed catcher arrive today. You have options on how to hang it. I hung it on the shepherd's hook. The hanger "cords" are adjustable which works out great. I have it hanging below the feeder about 6 inches as they recommended to allow the birds to feed in it if they want. I put a small rock in the middle to weigh it down a bit. We'll see if the birds are receptive to it. If they are, I'll buy another one. Not having the mess under the feeder in the mulch or seed on the ground to attract rodents would be a good thing.

I'll be waiting for a progress report. We do have one feeder I would put it under if it works!

I'll keep you posted. I saw a gold finch hanging out on the feeder and timouse flying in to grab a seed, so they are not deterred by the cord/ropes hanging around.

I checked my little seed catcher last night....yes, there were seed husks in it, as well as some seed that has fallen from the feeder, so it's doing the job. This AM I saw a bird feeding in it. So far so good...

I also had two hummingbirds flying around the yard. At one point they both landed on the same feeder. I've not seen that before in my yard.

At our cabin 5 miles from Bayfield we now have hummingbirds flying around - looking for feeders. I have been working in the garage with the door open. The hummingbirds have even been flying right in, checking out what I am doing, and then buzzing back out. I need to get some feeders, but I’m not here enough of the time to establish a pattern for keeping the feeders full. My mom always kept her feeders full, and had lots of humming birds around.

Lainey, how is the seed catcher working out? I would be putting it under the thistle feeder which is right outside a window - - so I can get a shot like this once in a while.

Also, thought I'd mention I followed my own suggestion and I made an oriole feeder from a coat hanger so it was like the one we had. Works great; now going through 2 oranges a day but that's ok. Sorry, its another blurry photo but it will have to do; got lawn work to do.
