Fisher cat in the back yard!

I've never seen a live one before, but tonight my son's dog chased one up a tree in my back yard. I had no idea they were in this area. When we go to the Fall Crawl we stop at the reservoir out in the western part of the state and they have a stuffed one on display and some literature about them. I assumed they were quite rare in Massachusetts. I'm surprised there is one in a residential neighborhood like mine. In case you don't know what they look like, here is a link to some pictures:

I've never seen or heard of a Fisher cat before. Interesting, Bill.

I'd never heard of such an animal. Neat.

My sister (who used to live in NH) lost a few cats to the fisher cat. I've not heard of any in our neighborhood, but you never know.

Ok, that's cool
Sounds like a little animal with quite the attitude

Here's an interesting article Bill
Seems Milford is not a big distance from you in Canton, maybe 20-30 miles is all

And if you have a house cat that roams outside, take precautions. Fisher cats are skilled predators.

I even saw an article where one attacked a small dog
Glad your son's dog put it into flight mode and not fight mode

They are an neat animal, but they present a few problems. One is that they are dangerous to small pets. Stell is 70 pounds of muscle, so she can take care of herself, but that doesn't mean the fisher won't get in a few whacks. The second is they "scream". If you google fisher screams you will get a youtube that has a recording.

Grant and Doug, thanks for th elinks. I may notify the local paper.

:) Apparently the main predator of a fisher cat is another fisher cat!
