This just indicates the power went off. If the quarter is at the bottom of the glass and there is ice again it means the power was off for quite some time and the rest of your food in the fridge might need to be tossed.

My bad, I didn’t mean to overlook the smartass font. Very unlike a smartass to misidentify fellow smartass. Please carry on.

Just had a chat with Val and Florence is not done with SC yet. Areas around Conway and Florence are severely flooded and the rivers are not scheduled to crest there for another few days at 4' above where they are now. Delivery companies like FedEx come from there and she says they are not delivering. Doesn't know when she will get stuff she ordered. Also, the coal ash retention pond at the local power company is threatening to leach into the drinking water supply, so they have been asked to cut back 50% on water usage - a lot! TBD what happens next on both fronts.

The little town of Kinston (where I spent many happy times growing up) did not escape flooding. Here's an article my niece in New Bern sent. Seems it was not as bad as Matthew there, but still not great.

U.S. 70 remains closed in Kinston; Neuse crested early Saturday morning

I spoke with my sister last night. She is short staffed at the endoscopy center she manages. Yesterday she was trying to find hotel rooms for some of the staff so they can work. Right now it would take them about 6 hours to get around the areas that are flooded. Not good.

^ Also, the trash company that Val uses is based in Conway and is not picking up (or at least wasn't as of a couple of days ago). They have to take all their trash to a recycling center.

So, what's the latest? I know these things aren't just "all better" in a week or two.

I think Conway is still pretty bad. Georgetown did not get hit as badly as they thought it was going to. What they do have a real problem with now is giant mosquitoes. Millions of them. Spraying is going on in some places, but it's gonna be awhile. Still a lot of standing water around to breed in.

Of course, everyone in NC and SC is dealing with repair and rebuilding. My niece will probably need a new roof, but I don't think they have seen the insurance adjustor yet. Just a huge backlog. The sad thing is many of the places most affected by the floods were already poor to begin with, so who knows if those towns or the people in them will ever recover.
