I've already anticipated that this thread could end up in Politics, so I started one there.

I think we can keep this one non-political. The man did walk the walk, starting with his amazing survival story as a Navy pilot in WWII. It is probably a sign of the times that one stupid campaign meme drove him from office when not long before he had the highest approval ratings in memory. It's probably another sign of the times that most of the commentary on his life will be in the Politics thread.

GHW Bush was always a valuable member of the Houston area community. I had a couple of great conversations with him; also as Acting Dean of Humanities I sat next to him on the podium and we chatted when he gave the commencement address at Rice University in 2000. He was an humble, down to earth, genuine mensch; and wonderful to talk to. I will always admire him!
He will be missed! RIP.

If you get a chance, visit his library in College Station, Texas. I absolutely enjoyed my visit there in 2017, plus learned quite a bit about him and his family. May he RIP.
